Dr. Agatha Jeffers

Dr. Agatha E. Jeffers is a Professor in the Department of Accounting & Finance at Montclair State University where she teaches International Accounting, Auditing, Contemporary Issues in Financial and Management Accounting. She is a Certified Public Accountant who worked as an auditor for a large accounting firm in New York. She also served for over 7 years at a very high level in the Ministry of Finance for the Governments of the countries of Nevis & St. Kitts, where she was responsible for advising the Government on financial matters and for the Development, Regulation, Supervision & Marketing of the International Financial Services Sector. During that time, she helped to develop the financial services sector, supervised the service providers on the island and also represented the country at numerous meetings of the OECD, FATF, IMF, UN as well as other international governmental and non-governmental organizations. During that time, she published numerous brochures and publications on behalf of the government, including creating and editing a 232 page publication entitled "The Nevis Golden Book 2003-2004." She also worked for the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, where her research was selected for presentation at an International Meeting of Central Banks at the Centre for Monetary Studies in Latin America (CEMLA) held in Colombia, South America.

Dr. Agatha Jeffers also wrote a weekly column in the St. Kitts-Nevis Observer Newspaper entitled "Ask Your Financial Advisor" where she addressed questions and other topics of interest to the citizens of the Eastern Caribbean.

Dr. Agatha E. Jeffers has traveled extensively (to over 70 countries) and has incorporated these experiences in her research and teaching.

Dr. Agatha E. Jeffers received formal training as a teacher in New York City and has considerable teaching experience from Kindergarten to the Graduate level. She incorporates many dynamic & innovative techniques in her teaching which have served to generate great interest in the variety of courses that she teaches. Her teaching evaluations are consistently extremely favorable.

Dr. Jeffers' research agenda is a continuation of her dissertation on international banking and her prior activities in the area of international financial issues. This research is concentrated in the area of international accounting, taxation and other contemporary matters such as harmonization and adoption of international financial reporting and U.S. accounting standards; measurement and reporting of environmental (green) accounting; international transfer pricing issues; and audit failure in the sub-prime mortgage debacle.

Dr. Jeffers has made numerous presentations at conferences and has published over 25 peer-reviewed publications in the past 5 years in Journals such as the CPA Journal, Journal of Leadership, Accountability and Ethics, National Accounting Journal, European Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Business & Economics, Practical Tax Strategies and Journal of International Taxation. In addition, she has several working papers and articles in the pipeline.

Dr. Jeffers works with her students and encourages them to undertake research activities. This has resulted in the publication of 2 articles which have been co-authored with 3 of her students. It is her hope that students will be motivated to continue to pursue research and teaching interests in accounting.

Dr. Agatha E. Jeffers currently provides consulting services to Eastern Caribbean financial institutions in the area of offshore financial services.

Dr. Jeffers also serve as an Editorial Reviewer on various journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Jeffers serve the Montclair State University Community in a variety of ways. She was a member of the SBUS Dean Search Committee which resulted in the appointment of the present Dean. She currently represents the African American Caucus on the President's Commission on Affirmative Action and Diversity (PCAAD). She is also a member of the SBUS Curriculum Committee and various Departmental committees. She also served (2007-2008) on the Global Education Grant Committee and supervised the Accounting Students in the Co-operative Education Program from 2005 - 2007.

Dr. Jeffers has received several awards and recognitions for excellence in her teaching, research and service. Of notable mention is her selection for the "2008 Bright Idea Award in Taxation" for her 2007 Research Paper entitled "Towards a Framework for the Measurement of Financial and Managerial Implications of Green Accounting in Corporations" sponsored by Seton Hall University and the NJPRO Foundation of the NJ Business and Industry Association (NJBIA).
