Professor | Economics | Montclair State University - Feliciano School of Business
Ira Sohn is a full professor in the Department of Economics, teaching courses in both finance and economics. He brings to the classroom over thirty-five years of teaching and research experience in both of these fields. Prior to joining Montclair State University in 1984, Dr. Sohn was closely associated with Professor Wassily Leontief, who, in 1973, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Science for his path-breaking work on input-output analysis. While working with Professor Leontief at New York University from 1975-84, he was engaged in multi-year studies on long-term projections of fuel and non-fuel minerals, long-term projections for national economies, in addition to studies on demographics and economic development.
Since his arrival at MSU, he developed the Department’s capstone course for students concentrating in finance – the Seminar in Finance – which he taught for 20 years, and has taught almost every undergraduate course offered in Finance by the Department. In addition, he developed two new courses in Finance at the graduate level, and is currently teaching the joint undergraduate economics/finance course developed for the Department’s
contribution to the new Minor in Business. In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Sohn is an active researcher, maintaining his expertise in energy and non-fuel minerals, with research papers that are regularly presented at academic conferences, which ultimately appear in peer-reviewed academic journals. In addition to his work on resources, he has also developed expertise in the area of economic and financial reform in South America, and in a new field of academic inquiry, international financial crime. He is a frequent contributor to the journal Foresight (The International Journal of Applied Forecasting), and is a member of the Board of Editors of the Journal of Applied Business and Economics. Dr. Sohn received his Ph.D. in economics from New York University in January 1976.
