Are there any prerequisites for the MBA program?

While there are no MBA program prerequisites, a strong mathematical background is required to succeed in the quantitative MBA courses.

Is prior work experience required?

Work experience is not required for acceptance into the MBA program. However, most Montclair State MBA candidates have worked full-time for three to six years prior to applying to the program. Applicants who lack professional experience should present strong academic credentials, personal statements, and recommendations.

Applicants for the Executive MBA will have four to five years of professional work experience and strong quantitative and communication skills as evidenced by GPA and GMAT scores.

Is the GMAT or GRE required for the MBA program? Can the test ever be waived?

The GMAT or GRE may be waived for MBA applicants who submit proof of the following to the Graduate School:

An earned bachelor's or master's degree with a 3.0* cumulative GPA or higher (transcripts from international institutions must be evaluated by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member and need to be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's or master's degree).

*Applicants who have a cumulative GPA below 3.0 may contact the MBA office to request consideration for the GMAT/GRE waiver. Decisions will be made on a case by case basis.

Are the MBA application requirements for the main campus program different from the Saturday MBA program?

The admission requirements are the same for both programs.

What are the application deadlines?

There is no application deadline for MBA admission. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis and processed as they are received. International students should note visa requirements. The Hybrid MBA program begins each January. The Executive MBA cohort begins each Fall.

What are the MBA application requirements for international students?

If your degree was earned outside the U.S., you must arrange for a course-by-course evaluation from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

TOEFL or IELTS scores are required if your first language is not English and your degree was obtained in a country where English is not the official language. In addition, an English-language proficiency test, administered at Montclair State, is required upon admittance.

Montclair State’s Office of International Services can assist you in everything from immigration and documentation advice to understanding cultural business differences.

Does the MBA Program waive courses or grant advanced standing for prior graduate or undergraduate work?

If you have completed relevant business coursework prior to your matriculation, you may be eligible for advanced standing. If you have an undergraduate degree in business, you are waived from the foundation courses and may complete your General MBA in the New MBA Program in as few as 37.5 credits*. If your undergraduate degree is not in business, the General MBA in the new MBA Program includes up to 12 credits of foundation courses. Your eligibility for waivers in these courses will be determined upon your acceptance into the program. Please make sure to submit official transcripts from all universities you have attended.

 * credit requirements apply to the new MBA program that began in the Spring 2012 semester.

I work fulltime: does this MBA program cater to full-time or part-time students?

More than 80 percent of our students are fully employed professionals pursuing MBA degrees on a part-time basis. Therefore, all of our MBA courses are offered in the evening, on Saturday, or on Friday evening and full-day on Saturday on alternate weekends.

The MBA program is technically a part-time program; however, if your schedule and course availability allow, you may enroll full-time (“full-time” for graduate students is at least 9 credits (semester hours) for each fall and spring semester). Students seeking full-time status in the MBA program should make an appointment with an academic adviser.

I plan to attend as a part-time student. How long will it take to complete the MBA?

If you have an undergraduate degree in business, you may complete the General MBA program in as few as 24 months through the main campus program or Hybrid MBA program, and 20 months in the Executive MBA program.

What if I need to take a leave of absence?

If you need to interrupt your studies for personal or professional reasons, a leave of absence may be granted for one semester.

Do you offer Saturday MBA classes?

A small number of MBA classes are available on Saturday mornings at the main (Montclair) campus. Most MBA classes meet one or two evenings during the week.

If you are only available on Saturdays, we offer an accelerated, cohort-style program on Saturdays at our main campus in Montclair.

May a Hybrid MBA student enroll in courses on weeknights?

If you are a Hybrid MBA or Executive MBA student, you may complete elective courses on weeknights. If you are a main campus student, you cannot enroll in Hybrid MBA or Executive MBA courses.

Are summer courses available?

The MBA program offers foundation and elective courses during the summer session, on six-, eight-, and twelve-week schedules.

What is the cost of the program? Is financial aid available?

The MBA cohort program cost is a package price.  The MBA package price is the same for both in-state and out-of-state.  Please note: The price for foundation courses and/or additional electives for a concentration(s) is not included in the package price.  The cost of foundation courses and/or additional elective courses do in fact depend on in-state or out-of-state status.

Many MBA students receive some form of financial support from the companies where they are employed. Financial aid is also available through graduate assistantships and a limited number of merit-based scholarships.
