The Department of Marketing is pleased to announce, in cooperation with the Department of Management, our second time offering in Cruise Ship Management and Marketing in the Spring 2017 semester.  Students will be able to register for this course during the Spring  2017 registration period and it is included in the Spring Semester tuition for up to 18 credits.

This 3 credit course (MKTG493-01 or HOSP 392-01) qualifies as a business elective and also as a required elective course for both the Hospitality Management and Sports, Events and Tourism Marketing concentrations.  As such, it is open to all business majors. This Spring semester-hybrid course opens the door to a variety of careers in the Sports, Events, Tourism and Hospitality industries by utilizing the cruise ship and resort platform to introduce you to many of the areas of knowledge and skills that are utilized throughout this great industry.  Regardless of your academic concentration in the Feliciano School of Business this course will give you some insight into careers in one of the fastest growing group of industries in the world-tourism and leisure.  The class topics include food and beverage management, shore excursions and tourism marketing, entertainment, casino operations, and several others. A behind the scenes ship tour will probably be included. 

Instruction for this class will be provided by personnel on the Norwegian Breakaway and also by Feliciano School of Business professors, Dr. Jack Samuels and Dr. Anish Parikh.  The course will involve five mandatory 2.5 hour classes which will be held on Weds., January 25, Feb. 8 and 22 and March 1 and 22 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on campus.   Ten hours of instruction is held prior to departure, 2.5 hours after the cruise and twenty hours are held on the ship.  The final meeting and exam will be held on March 22th 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Course requirements include projects, independent reading and a final exam.  Additional learning is attributed to field trips on the cruise or independent learning.

All students will be required to sign up to join us on the Norwegian Breakaway during spring break on March 5-12, 2017 out of New York City.  The fee for this cruise is currently at $1110.29 per person, double occupancy with a reduction for triple/quad occupancy, including all gratuities, beverage (Sorry, must be over 21 years old for the beverage package!), special meal,  or internet package for the first two in each cabin and insurance for an inside cabin.   You must register for the course during the Spring 2017 registration period and obtain a permit from the department.  To obtain a permit, please see Ms. Lynda Trainor in the Department of Marketing office, room 592 or Ms. Madeleine Morrow in the Department of Management office, room 430.   For early registrants your name will be put on a clearance list and you will be granted a permit providing that you pay your $250 deposit to the cruise agency prior to registering.

The cruise features three ports including NCL’s great private Island and a day in Nassau, Bahamas and a day in Port Canaveral, Florida.  Included is an educational and fun shore excursion to Cocoa Beach Florida (during the Port Canaveral Stop) which includes a special talk and visit to the World Famous Largest in the World Ron Jon’s Surf Shop.

Family members and friends may join you on the cruise.  Outside or Balcony cabins may be available at higher costs.  Please inquire with Ms. Hunter.   Please note that it is necessary that one person in each cabin be over 21 years of age.  In order to facilitate this the booking agent will try to pair you up as necessary to fill any such requirements.

A non-refundable deposit of $250 per cabin should be paid within 2 weeks of signing up and must be paid no later than Nov. 15.  Full payment is due by December 15th.  Space availability after these dates may be limited.  Please note that all students and other participants must sign a liability release form for this course.  Montclair State and its instructional staff are only responsible for providing instructional services for this class.  Please see liability release form for complete details before paying your cruise deposit.

Information sessions will be held on November 1st from 2-3pm (SBUS 570) and November 2nd from 7:30 - 8:30pm (SBUS 570).
